Milone studied at the seminary at Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri, the North American College and the Gregorian University in Rome; on December 15, 1957 he was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Omaha.
He attended St. Joseph's Seminary and College (B.A., 1964), Gregorian University Rome (S.T.L, 1968), and the Biblical Institute Rome (S.S.D., 1976).
He was ordained as a priest on December 19, 1964 after studying at the Jesuits of Saint Maron of Ghazier as well as the University of Rome and the Gregorian University.
From 1880 until 1887, Mjeda studied literature at the Carthusian monastery of Porta Coeli, in Valencia, Spain, rhetoric, Latin and Italian in Croatia at a Jesuit institution, at the Gregorian University in Rome, and at another Gregorian college in Chieri, Italy.
Back in America, he attended the University of Virginia Law School and worked as an attorney and staffer to Senator Pete Domenici in Washington, D.C., before being assigned as a seminarian to the North American College, Vatican City, and attending the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy in preparation for the priesthood.
In 1883 he received a doctorate in Philosophy and bachelors in Theology and Canon Law from the Gregorian University.
On 27 April 2010, Pope Benedict XVI announced that the rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Gianfranco Ghirlanda, S.J., would be succeeded by Dumortier as the next rector of the university.
He co-founded the religious journal of the Institute of SS Cyril and Methodius, and became a professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
