Arctic Terns are long-lived birds that spend considerable time raising only a few young, and are thus said to be K-selected.
Breiðamerkursandur is an important breeding ground for birds, for example Arctic Tern and Great Skua.
One of these is Repparfjordbotn with its large colony of Arctic Terns and its autumn numbers of Goosander.
In summer Arctic Terns nest on the ground alongside the path and may "dive-bomb" visitors who get too close.

There are 45 bird species nesting on the islet annually, including Sedge Warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus), Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) and Whitethroat (Sylvia communis).
