On June 22, 2012, Derrick finished 4th in the 10k Olympic Trials, getting beat out by Galen Rupp, Matt Tegenkamp, and Dathan Ritzenhein.

As a high school senior at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois, Derrick gained recognition when he won the Illinois state cross country championship and set the course record on the altered Detweiller Park course, possibly eclipsing the time that Craig Virgin (the only American to ever win at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships) ran on the original course.
Additionally, Virgin remains the record-holder in Illinois Boys Cross Country, running a 13:50.6 in 1972, which has only been approached by within five seconds by Chris Derrick in 2007 (13:51.8) and Lukas Verzbicas in 2010 (13:53.8)
