As such, it had a large and lasting effect on the rivers of the area when it deposited a large amount of sediment, as recorded in the sedimentary record of Lake Tutira.
On 8 March 1988, Cyclone Bola significantly damaged the line between Napier and Gisborne, resulting in the truncation of the Endeavour to Napier.
It also lies on the Palmerston North-Gisborne railway, though passengers services ceased in 1988 following Cyclone Bola.
