The Danger area extends out to sea and mariners sailing to and from Rye Harbour must pass south of the Stephenson Shoal to avoid it.
The danger area associated with the range includes sea areas to the north of the bay and the range is used for live firing from Royal Navy vessels as well as for bombing practice by the RAF.
From here to Great Thorness to the east and Porchfield to the south, the land is used by the military and is marked on maps as a Danger Area.
