In 1961 the American choreographer James Waring created a dance piece entitled Dithyramb with music and objects by the Fluxus artist George Brecht.
Waring, who designed the costumes for his dance works, collaborated with visual artists such as George Brecht, Red Grooms, Al Hansen, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Allan Kaprow, Larry Poons, Robert Watts and Robert Whitman.

Musically, Waring sometimes wrote his own music, but more often he worked with composers and musicians such as Philip Corner, Terry Jennings, Malcolm Goldstein, Richard Maxfield and Marga Richter, among others.

Johnson moved with Richard Lippold to New York City by early 1949, rejoining Cage and Cunningham and befriending, within the next couple of years, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, Ad Reinhardt, Stanley Vanderbeek, Norman Solomon, Lucy Lippard, Sonja Sekula, Carolyn Brown and Earle Brown, Judith Malina, Diane Di Prima, Julian Beck, Remy Charlip, James Waring, and innumerable others.
Sobotka also danced in James Waring's company and for major American choreographers and designed costumes for works by Paul Taylor, Erick Hawkins, and John Taras.
He recruited playwright Leo Brady, director Alan Schneider and theatrical designer James Waring to the faculty.
