In 1849 he was appointed Resident Magistrate in Otago, and occupied the position from 1860 to 1862 of Sub-Treasurer of Otago; was Curator of Intestate Estates for some six years, and Sheriff and Commissioner of Native Reserves.
Subsequent taxonomic splits have retricted the name to the populations in the Southland and Otago Regions in New Zealand's South Island.
Remnants of this bush that grow in Otago are home to native moths and insects, and areas with this species are now being protected with covenants.
