Pusyamitra Sunga is said to have performed the Ashvamedha rite after he toppled Mauryan rule in 185 BC.
Elst also writes in detail about claims that certain Hindu rulers, including Pusyamitra Sunga, were iconoclasts; evidence to that effect had been previously presented by Romila Thapar, Richard Eaton and others.
The Kukkutura sangharama was later destroyed and its monks killed by Pusyamitra Sunga, according to the 2nd century CE Ashokavadana.
