A faction of the Covenanters known as the Engagers, led by the Duke of Hamilton, therefore sent an army to England to try to restore Charles I in 1648.

During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms the Ogilvies supported King Charles I and the Royalist cause.
It was briefly taken in 1647 during the War of the Three Kingdoms by General David Leslie.
David Leslie, 1st Lord Newark (c. 1600–1682) was a cavalry officer and General in the English Civil War and Scottish Civil Wars.
In 1645, the castle served as a stopping-off point for the royalist army of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose during his campaign against the Covenanter forces of the Marquess of Argyll.
Wemyss later supported the Scottish parliament against Charles I in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and died in 1649.
